Corporate Bitcoin Accumulation Slows to a Trickle as Balance Sheets Show Unrealized Losses

Companies added just 5,900 BTC to their treasuries in Q1, a sharp decline reflecting market caution and unfavorable accounting.

Publicly traded firms and private enterprises sitting on Bitcoin have dramatically curbed their purchasing activity over the past quarter. New data reveals that corporate treasuries collectively acquired only 5,900 BTC in the last three months — the lowest quarterly intake since the 2022 bear market. The slowdown is widely attributed to persistent unrealized losses on existing holdings, which discourage fresh capital allocation.

Why the Hesitation?

The primary factor is accounting reality. Under current rules, companies that hold Bitcoin on their balance sheets must mark it to market each quarter. After the asset's price failed to reclaim its all-time highs, many treasuries now carry significant paper losses. Chief financial officers, already wary of shareholder scrutiny, are reluctant to double down on an asset class that has not delivered immediate returns.

Market conditions also play a role. Volatility has remained high, and the macroeconomic environment — with interest rates still elevated — makes it harder for firms to justify speculative bets. Instead, many are hoarding cash or paying down debt.

“We're not seeing any urgency among corporate buyers. The thesis hasn't changed, but the timing no longer feels right for large lump-sum purchases,” said one treasury manager who spoke on condition of anonymity.

A Look at the Numbers

  • Total corporate Bitcoin holdings now stand at roughly 285,000 BTC.
  • The top five holders, led by MicroStrategy, account for more than 85% of all corporate Bitcoin.
  • Small and mid-cap firms are the most hesitant, with many reducing their positions altogether.

Whether the trend reverses depends on two factors: a decisive price breakout above previous highs, or a change in accounting standards that would allow firms to ignore temporary paper losses. Until then, the crypto treasury buying spree appears to be on ice.
