Leverage Cascade: $550M in Crypto Positions Wiped Out as Bitcoin Breaches $84,000 Floor
Massive margin calls triggered cascading liquidations totaling over half a billion dollars as Bitcoin slipped below the $84,000 mark.
The crypto market saw a sudden and violent deleveraging event early Tuesday, with total liquidations exceeding $550 million as Bitcoin tumbled below the psychologically important $84,000 level. The move caught many leveraged long positions off guard, forcing exchanges to close positions in rapid succession and amplifying the downward pressure.
Anatomy of a Liquidation Cascade
According to data from major analytics platforms, the majority of the liquidations came from long positions, which accounted for over $480 million of the total. Bitcoin alone represented roughly $180 million of that sum, while Ethereum and other altcoins contributed significant amounts. The breakdown highlights the fragility of highly leveraged markets when a key support level gives way.
- Bitcoin: ~$180M in liquidations, predominantly longs
- Ethereum: ~$120M in liquidations
- Altcoins (Solana, Dogecoin, etc.): remaining ~$250M
“When you have a concentrated pool of leverage just above a round number like $84,000, a small break can trigger a chain reaction. The OI (open interest) was stacked against the move, and the market is now repricing risk very quickly,” said a derivatives analyst monitoring the event.
As the dust settles, traders are watching whether Bitcoin can reclaim the $84,000 level or if further downside is in store. Some argue that the flush of leveraged positions could actually create a healthier market foundation, while others caution that lingering macroeconomic headwinds may keep volatility elevated.
