Pakistan Launches Dedicated Federal Unit to Oversee Crypto Compliance

Pakistan is taking a more formal approach to cryptocurrency regulation with the creation of a dedicated federal enforcement unit. The move, announced by the country's financial monitoring authorities, aims to bring crypto transactions under clearer legal frameworks while targeting illicit use cases such as money laundering and unlicensed exchanges.

Targeted Oversight, Not a Blanket Ban

The new unit will operate under the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and focus on investigating crypto-related financial crimes. Unlike earlier blanket restrictions on crypto services in Pakistan, this enforcement body signals a shift toward targeted oversight — allowing legitimate blockchain activity to proceed while cracking down on bad actors.

Key responsibilities of the unit include:

  • Tracking unregistered crypto exchanges and peer-to-peer platforms
  • Collaborating with the State Bank of Pakistan to monitor cross-border crypto flows
  • Developing forensic tools to trace blockchain transactions linked to illegal activities

Industry observers note that this approach mirrors trends in other South Asian nations that are moving from ambiguity to structured regulation. "Pakistan is trying to balance innovation with consumer protection," said a fintech analyst familiar with the region.

While the enforcement unit does not legalize cryptocurrencies outright, it provides a clearer path for compliant businesses. The move is expected to encourage more formal crypto startups in Pakistan, provided they adhere to anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) standards set by the financial regulator.
